2023 Volvo XC100: All-Electric Flagship on the Way

The Swedish carmaker has been one of the important players in the premium segment for decades. It may not be as popular as the German competition, but it has brought so many important technologies to the industry. Things aren’t much different these days, as the company is still one of the leaders regarding safety, as well as electrification. That’s why we have big expectations from the 2023 Volvo XC100, which will be the company’s new flagship model. Although there is still no official confirmation, the new SUV is already in the advanced stage of development.

At this point, we know that this should be a new flagship model in the company’s lineup. It will be notably bigger than the XC90 and, importantly, it will be based on the new platform, dedicated to battery-electric vehicles. So, the new model will come completely electrified, with a respectable range and charging speed. Naturally, we expect a high level of luxury and other things you would normally expect from a full-size luxury SUV.

2023 Volvo XC100 Design

The 2023 Volvo XC100 will be a brand-new model and from what we can hear, it will bring so many important novelties. First of all, it will ride on a new platform. As a part of a bigger corporation, it will benefit from Geely’s new SEA platform, which stands for Sustainable Experience Architecture. Given the name, it’s obvious that we are talking about a platform for electric vehicles.

Considering that the Chinese company is one of the leaders in terms of electrification, we have big expectations regarding advanced technologies, particularly in terms of charging. We will get to this part of the design in a minute.

Exterior

When it comes to the exterior design, this is going to be a new flagship model in the company’s lineup. It is about to feature full-size dimensions and if we can trust rumors, it should be around 7 inches longer than the mid-size XC90. That means over 200 inches in total length, while we also expect to see a longer wheelbase, a few more inches in width etc.

The aesthetical aspect of the vehicle is still a mystery. The company didn’t come up with any photos, although some sources suggest that the Swedish manufacturer did make a few concept cars, which weren’t presented to the public. On the other hand, the famous Kolesa.Ru came up with rendering photos that show a rather conservative design approach, where a lot of design solutions are borrowed from the current lineup.

Interior

Considering that we are talking about a full-size SUV, the first thing that comes to mind is the amount of cabin space. With bigger dimensions, we expect more passenger space compared to the mid-size sibling, especially in the third row, which should become adult-friendly.

On the other hand, it’s still early to talk about the dashboard design and overall cabin design. Still, if we consider Volvo’s typical design philosophy, as well as the current trends in the EV segment, it’s pretty much for sure that the cabin design will be simplistic, with clean lines and the lack of physical controls. Instead, we count on a massive infotainment screen, while rumors also suggest that the instrument cluster could be removed completely. Instead, we would see some kind of augmented-reality head-up display.

2023 Volvo XC100 Drivetrain and Battery

The 2023 Volvo XC100 will come with an all-electric setup. At this point, details are still unknown but rumors suggest that base models could come with a single electric motor, with a max output of around 400 horsepower. On the other hand, dual-motor versions would be good for about 455 horsepower, while we wouldn’t exclude the possibility to see a high-performance version either, probably with a max output of around 600 horsepower.

The new SEA platform will provide excellent performance regarding charging, though the exact battery capacity is still a mystery. Once again, we can only rely on rumors, which suggest around 350-400 miles of range.

2023 Volvo XC100 Release Date

At this point, the 2023 Volvo XC100 still waits for official confirmation but various reports suggest that the new model could arrive already in the second half of the next year.
