2023 Land Rover Defender 80: What We Know So Far

The iconic off-roader has been completely redesigned a few years ago and while there are already two familiar layouts on the offer, the 90 and 110 models, it looks like the company wants to offer another version, even smaller than the 90 model. Allegedly, the company wants to offer a more affordable model, which would feature a similar price to models mainstream off-roaders like Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. This model will come as the 2023 Land Rover Defender 80.

What’s interesting is that the new model won’t have that many things in common with the current Defender. Instead, it will share parts with some other Land Rover models, in order to be more affordable. From what we know so far, it will come in a few powertrain options, where the base version will probably use a 3-cylinder unit.

The latest reports suggest that the Land Rover Defender 80 could arrive already in the first half of the next year.

2023 Land Rover Defender 80 Design

As we already mentioned, the 2023 Land Rover Defender 80 will most likely feature a little bit different design compared to the 90 and 110 models. This refers to the platform, as this iteration will actually ride on the JLR D8 architecture, the one that already underpins models like Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Sport. However, most parts will be shared with the model called Tata Harrier, which comes from JLR’s parent company. In any case, we count on AWD layout and lots of standard and available off-road features, combined with a nice suspension setup that should ensure a smooth ride in all conditions.

On the other hand, the exterior design will closely mimic Defender’s styling approach. We expect to see the same or very similar front face and shape, though dimensions should be slightly smaller compared to the Defender 90. Interestingly, most sources suggest a four-door layout, despite the expected dimensions.

Interior

This aspect is still a mystery but while it’s early to talk about details, we may presume some of the most basic things. This particularly refers to the overall cabin layout. As we’ve just mentioned, the Land Rover Defender 80 will probably come with four doors, but we can’t say how spacious and comfortable this SUV is going to be.

Also, we count on a little bit different dashboard design compared to other Defenders, with a little bit simplified design and slightly less impressive materials. Simply, the company will tend to make this SUV more affordable.

Still, that doesn’t mean that we won’t be seeing a lot of tech features. We count on the new Pivi Pro infotainment system, as well as on a 10-inch infotainment screen. Furthermore, all models should come standard with goodies like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. Goodies like in-dash navigation and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot will come as options.

2023 Land Rover Defender 80 Engines

When it comes to powertrain, we count on a variety of options on the offer. The 2023 Land Rover Defender 80 probably won’t come with hybrid powertrains on the offer, but gasoline and diesel units are a certain thing. When it comes to gasoline engines, base models could come with a small 1.5-liter three-cylinder unit, which puts out around 160 horsepower. A 2.0-liter turbo-four is also pretty much a certain thing, with a max output of around 250 horsepower.

When it comes to diesel units, we count on a familiar 2.0-liter unit, which comes in three output variants, with 150, 180, or 240 horsepower.

2023 Land Rover Defender 80 Release Date and Price

As we’ve just mentioned, the 2023 Land Rover Defender 80 could arrive already in the first half of the next year, with a starting price of around 30.000 dollars. More details will come soon.
