You can call it a twist of fate or any other way you want but the fact is that the 2022 GMC Hummer is coming with a design that no one expected for this nameplate. To remind you, the third Hummer was discontinued a decade ago, due to an economic crisis, as it was famous as one of the thirstiest vehicles in the automotive industry. The new model, though, is coming in a completely different form, as an all-electric vehicle.
The new model is about to hit the market sometime in the second half of the next year and we already know that the most luxurious and most potent version will come first. The rest of the lineup will come during 2022 or later. The first version will come in the form of pickup, but the SUV model should arrive soon after. Also, this will be one of the fastest EVs on the market, while the company also claims a pretty respectable range.
2022 GMC Hummer Design
While the previous Hummers used thirsty gasoline engines, the new 2022 GMC Hummer will come with a completely different design, with an all-electric layout. This will be the most significant difference compared to the previous models, while the styling will closely resemble the legendary design from the previous generation. That’s obviously the point of calling this electric vehicle a Hummer.
At this point, we know that the 2022 GMC Hummer will certainly come in both pickup and SUV layouts. The pickup is about to come first and we count on dimensions similar to Sierra. More precisely, the exterior dimensions will be slightly smaller, while the interior room will be pretty similar. Details about the SUV model are yet to come.
2022 GMC Hummer Drivetrain and Performances
Without any doubt, this is the most interesting part of the 2022 GMC Hummer. As we already mentioned, the most powerful version is about to come first. It will be called the Edition 1 and it will sport three electric motors. According to the company, the max power will go around 1.000 horses. The company also claims 11.000 pound-feet of torque but numbers in reality will probably go around 1.100 pound-feet torque.
With such numbers, we count on nothing less but exceptional performances. It looks like launch control will be standard in this model, which will help this truck go from zero to sixty in just 3 seconds. Besides impressive acceleration, this truck will also be quite capable. We presume that the max towing capacity will go around 11.000 pounds.
Battery and Range
GMC still hasn’t come up with the exact battery capacity but what we know is that the new truck will be able to make around 350 miles on a single charge. Besides a quite respectable range, the new model will also offer a plethora of charging options. This also includes a fast-charging option, which will allow adding 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Details about the fuel economy are yet to come.
Interior
When it comes to interior design, a GMC spokesman says that the main inspiration for the 2022 GMC Hummer’s cabin weс Apollo missions and, to be honest, the dashboard and the rest of the cabin really looks a lot like a spaceship. Of course, large screens are also an additional note to the overall futuristic appearance. The touchscreen measures 13.4 inches, while the instrument cluster is 12.3 inches large. A fun fact – graphics for these screens were done by Epic Game, the company that is responsible for Fortnite and few more popular video games.
The truck version will feature pretty much the same amount of space as the crew cab version of GMC Sierra. That means a lot of room for passengers in both rows. A big difference will be in terms of the roof, which will feature a classic T-top–esque design and which is also removable. That definitely brings a bit of a Jeep Gladiator vibe.
Of course, the number of tech features will be pretty long, while we also count on lots of safety features, including things like automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist etc. Things like adaptive cruise control and other semi-autonomous driving systems are also expected.
2022 GMC Hummer Release Date and Price
The 2022 GMC Hummer Edition 1 will arrive in the last quarter of 2021, while other versions will start arriving during 2022. The Edition 1 will cost around 112.600 dollars, while the latter will be more affordable. Most basic models are expected to go around 80.000 dollars. Of course, key competitors will be other EV trucks and SUVs, from companies like Tesla, Rivian etc.
